An AI Plot Hole Checker That Reads the Book Against Itself
An AI plot hole checker reads a book against its own logic and flags where the story breaks it. In a Full read, StoryHelm’s Coherence Guardian checks each book against the canon built from that book and can flag a character acting on something they never learned, or a condition that cannot hold.
What it can flag, inside a book
- Knowledge a character never got. A character who acts on a fact no scene gave them.
- A condition that cannot hold. Someone shown injured, unconscious or absent and then acting unaffected.
- An ability used before it was gained, or a rule the same book set up and then broke.
- A clock that breaks. A character in two places at once; a “three years ago” that cannot be (the Timeline pass).
- A place out of position. A character somewhere the book’s own geography says they cannot be, or a journey done impossibly fast.
Each flag carries a severity and, often, the line that raised it, quoted. It runs in a Full read (the Author, Series and Studio plans, and the free trial at public launch); the Writer plan runs a Quick scan, which does not include the Guardian.
What it can’t
It cannot judge an easy exit: the obvious solution your characters ignore is a craft call, not a contradiction, and no check knows your characters’ reasons. It does not read your series as one text: across books, a cross-book check you start compares only the appearance and distinguishing marks of same-named characters, their voice, and the same event’s dates in two fully read books, so a plot hole that spans Book 2 and Book 5 stays with you. And it can flag; it does not catch everything, and nobody should tell you a checker does: in our test read of an invented manuscript (October 13, 2026), an object destroyed in one chapter and shown whole in a later one was not flagged. How to find plot holes in your novel is the method that finds the rest; the knowledge ledger is the tool for the commonest kind.
Questions authors ask
It is the same read, looked at from the plot’s side. A continuity error is a contradicted fact; a plot hole is a break in the story’s own logic. The Guardian flags both kinds inside a book. Can AI check your novel for continuity errors? covers the other side.
No. It shows you where the logic broke and the line that broke it; the fix is yours, in your own prose.
No. You write every word yourself, in its built-in editor or in files you import, and it reads. Two disclosed features produce text that isn’t your manuscript: Ship Dock drafts pitch material about the book for you to review and edit, and Translation Studio produces machine-generated translated editions of a finished book.
StoryHelm is an AI manuscript-intelligence platform for indie series authors. It reads and analyzes an entire fiction series, catches continuity errors before readers do, and never writes or rewrites the author’s prose. You write every word of your book yourself, in StoryHelm’s built-in editor or in files you import. Two disclosed features produce text that isn’t your manuscript: Ship Dock drafts pitch material about the book (a query letter, synopsis, logline or back-cover blurb) for you to review and edit, and Translation Studio produces machine-generated translated editions of a finished book.
